What is Feng Shui?
A Guide to Understanding the Ancient Art of Energy Harmony
Kerstin Tracy | Feng Shui
Have you ever entered a room, home, or office and immediately felt uncomfortable?
That happened to me when I was eleven years old. My parents took my sister and me to look at a home they were thinking about purchasing. What an exciting concept - we would move from a small apartment into our own home. The second I walked in I felt depressed, and cold, and just wanted to run away. The house was cold and depressing on the inside. I could feel that energy. My parents did not listen to me when I told them what I perceived. This house did not bring us luck at all.
Of course, I did not know what this was all about. I had never heard of Feng Feng Shui. You can only imagine how confirming it was to read my first Feng Shui book in my twenties. Feng Shui was one of the best-kept secrets for the longest time and was not made accessible to the mainstream world until the 1980s.
So what is this all about?
Feng Shui, pronounced “fung shway,” translates as “wind” (Feng) and “water” (Shui), draws from the Taoist understanding of nature and its energy flow, known as Chi. Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese art of using the energies of our environment inside and outside our home or office to balance and improve our lives.
Feng Shui principles can create a healthy workplace by promoting open communication and a sense of community. It can encourage positive energy flow and support the body's natural healing process when applied to health. Feng Shui can also help manage stress and restore balance to the mind and body. While Feng Shui is not a replacement for conventional medicine, it may offer additional support for those seeking to improve their health. Still, it can be used to support the body's natural healing process and to avoid issues from happening in the first place.
The goal of Feng Shui is to create harmony between individuals and their surroundings by balancing the energy in a given space, leading to improved well-being, success, and happiness. However, Feng Shui is more than just a design or aesthetic practice. It’s about how your environment impacts your life, from your health and relationships to your finances and personal growth.
For anyone looking to add more harmony and positivity to their home, exploring Feng Shui principles can be an inspiring journey toward a balanced and fulfilling life.
Here are 5 things about Feng Shui you should know:
Feng Shui Is About Energy Flow
Feng Shui centers on creating a balanced flow of energy, or chi, in a space. By arranging furniture, decor, and elements thoughtfully, you can improve this flow, promoting well-being, positivity, and harmony in your home or workspace. The Five Elements Are Key
Wood, fire, earth, metal, and water represent fundamental energies in Feng Shui. Balancing these elements in your decor—for instance, using wood for growth and green tones, or metal for clarity and metallic finishes—helps create a supportive and balanced environment.Clutter Disrupts Harmony
Clutter is more than just visual noise in Feng Shui; it blocks the flow of positive energy and can contribute to stress or distraction. Keeping spaces organized and free of excess items helps maintain smooth energy flow and promotes a sense of calm and focus.Location Matters for Room Functions
In Feng Shui, each area of your home has a role. Bedrooms are best positioned in quieter areas for rest, while lively spaces like the kitchen and living room should be placed to welcome energy and activity. Proper room placement enhances each area’s function and energy.Your Intentions Matter
Your intention and purpose for a space are crucial in Feng Shui. Practicing Feng Shui isn’t just about following rules—it’s about designing with mindfulness. Focusing on how you want to feel in each area helps you choose elements and arrangements that align with your personal goals.
Imagine walking into a room and instantly feeling at ease or inspired. This isn’t by accident; it’s the magic of Feng Shui at work. From the placement of a bed to the direction of a front door, every detail matters. Even small adjustments, like decluttering or adding plants, can transform your space into a sanctuary of positive energy.
Embracing Feng Shui is a journey of aligning your surroundings with the natural flow of the universe. As you cultivate balance and harmony within your home, remember that these changes reach beyond mere aesthetics; they are about creating a space that nurtures your spirit, supports your intentions, and encourages personal growth. Each adjustment, no matter how small, plays a role in shaping the energy of your environment and, in turn, the energy of your life. Trust in the process, embrace mindfulness, and allow your space to become a true reflection of your inner self. Through the art of Feng Shui, may you find peace, prosperity, and fulfillment in every corner of your home.
Ready to welcome balance and abundance into your life? Start by observing your space and asking: Does this feel aligned with my intentions? Often, the smallest shifts yield the most profound results.
Remember, Feng Shui is not just about the physical—it’s a mindset. When you invite harmony into your surroundings, you invite harmony into your life. Let the energy flow!
